How to be happy (or even happier?): 20 tiny changes you should try!

by | Aug 20, 2020 | 3 comments

I am so glad to share these 100 tiny ways to make you happy because they really work and I tried them all out! For the longest period of time, I was a person who always overthinks like crazy and complains about things. Basically everything. I still vividly remember during those really bad days, my boyfriend looked into my eyes and asked “Anything I can do to make you happier? You seem worried and sad nearly every day.” This hit me so hard. I don’t want to be this version of self anymore! It takes me some days to finally realize we are responsible for our own happiness. No one can make you happy unless you do.

So here’s are 100 ways to improve our mental health and no matter what state you are now, I am really proud of you that you are reading these ideas to make your life better :’)!

1. Wake up early

I know everyone knows about this tip but waking up is not just about productivity! Waking up can make you a happier person. I don’t know is this rule applies to all people or not but I know it certainly applies to many of us. From my personal experience, I realized the days when I don’t do the workout in the morning are the days that I am wake up late. Waking up at 7 am I feel like I can conquer the world while waking up at 11 am makes me feel so grumpy and sad, I simply don’t have any motivation to do the workout.

Another reason is I always feel so guilty when I waking up late and I feel like I’ve wasted the day (even there are still many hours left). This makes me feel really sad and angry about myself.

So yes, I hope wake up early is so important because this directly makes us happier!

2. Doing brain dump

Doing a brain dump is so amazing and if you haven’t try this, you have to!

First thing first, have you come across a situation that people ask you how to spell a vocabulary but you can’t spell it correctly? But when you write the vocabulary on paper, you can spell that perfectly!

This happens to our emotions too! Sometimes when we feel so grumpy or sad, you will feel so much calmer when you write this on the paper rather than keep storing those messy emotions in your brain. Similar to journaling, when it comes to brain dump, you just write whatever you can think of into the paper for 30 minutes. The longer you write, the deeper you explore yourself and you will feel lighter after doing this brain dump!

This can be life changing and I really suggest you try it out!

3. Use less social media

If you are not happy, perhaps you are scrolling your Instagram feed too much? We’ve all been there – We are scrolling other people’s stories, it’s all fun and relaxing until a thought creep into your mind “Why all girls in Instagram look that pretty and slim and rich? Don’t they need to work?” “I wish I can afford that Prada bag too! “. At first, you don’t think that thought is powerful enough to make you unhappy. But when you use social media every day, those thoughts will eventually adds up and you will start comparing your real self to other’s filtered self.

Academic research revealed that there is a causal link between the use of social media and negative effects on well-being, mainly for depression and loneliness. Using social media also causes the FOMO (Fear of missing out) effect, which again, makes you unhappy!

I stop using instagram that often and I am so proud to tell you guys: I feel truly happier!

4. Reading inspiring quotes

When you feel unmotivated during those rainy days, why not scrolling the Pinterest feed and found some nice quotes? It’s so easy to do but it is a really heartwarming and soothing little thing to do. “Be the change you wish to see in the world” is one of my favorite quotes! What’s yours? Comment down below!

5. Choose your friends wisely

I am a believer of “Rule of 5”: You’re the average of the five people spend the most time with.

If your friends are all very negative and every time you meet them you are not feeling good. You know what, leave those emotion vampires and you will feel better! I know it’s hard to completely cut them off in your life, but at least, don’t meet them too frequently.

After all, you are the one who responsible to protect your environment and your happiness!

6. Pick the right vocabularies to describe your mental state

This is one interesting tips I discovered in 2020 and I can’t wait to share with you. Always pick the right vocabularies to describe your emotions!

Rather than telling people “I am just not really in the mood”, “I am not okay”, “I am sad”, try to express your emotions in detail and with the right vocabularies! “I’m disappointed to him because ….”, “I am overwhelmed by the workload of this job” “I am insecure about …”

This is just a tiny change but I swear you feel much better rather than saying “I am not okay”!

7. Watch less news

Watching news is bad for your mental health and the weird part is, we never think this can be one of the reasons because watching the news is so normal! Everyone is watching the news and especially during the COVID days, of course, I have to watch the news to protect myself!

While watching the news and keep us informed but if you consume too much, it can be toxic to your life.

A study found that people who watched negative news showed an increase in both anxious and sad moods only after 14-minutes of viewing television news bulletins and programs.

You may think, well, that’s fine I can watch positive news! But in reality, most of the news is negative because the more sentimental the news is, the more people will be addicted to watching and the more advertising revenue the news station earns!

So, please watch less news if you want to protect your mood! After all, we don’t want to keep pouring our brain negative information.

8. Knowing the five/five rule

Sometimes we are so caught up in some trivial things, before losing your mind, take a deep breath and remind yourself the rule of five (or 5/5 rule). The five by five rule means you shouldn’t spend more than five minutes worrying about something that won’t matter in five years.

This rule is so powerful and works wonders for me. This rule is so to the point that you have no room to argue at all. Your brain will just surrender to this thought!

9. Keep learning

Keep learning makes us happier because engage in a difficult yet challenging tasks makes us truly feel fulfilling. But wait! You don’t have to force yourself to take a coding course to makes you happy, learning some new beauty hacks and life hacks can bring you some little joy too!

If you are interested: Here’s the 10 Beauty hacks models don’t want you do know! I hope you can learn some new tricks and bring you some joy!

10. Do what you love

It is certainly easier said than done but life is too short to do the things you hate every day. You don’t be a “YES” women for everything, make yourself a priority! If you don’t want to babysit, reject your friend! Don’t be guilty and saying “NO” is actually not rude if you are express in the right way!

I still remember how scared it feels like when I quit my headhunter job cold turley and decided to be a full time blogger, but when I look back, I’m glad that I took that leap :’) I am now working more hours in front of my Macbook but at least I am a happier person :’)

11. Fake smile

I remember once I listened to a guided meditation and she told me “Smile, even if it’s a fake smile”. I somehow just cried. (I can’t explain why though…)

But what I’m trying to say is, a fake smile can really make you happier because this trick your brain you are actually smiling. Our brain is not meticulous enough to identify the difference between a fake smile and a genuine smile. Soon, your brain will release the chemicals that make you truly smile and feel happiness.

So yes, fake it until you make it apply to this case!

12. Listen to powerful songs

Songs can certainly affect your mental state to a large extent. Why? Because your brain can digest the lyrics and affect your actions. Stop listening to the sad love songs and listen to happy powerful songs, this can change your vibes!

Here are my Top 10 songs for QUEENS and hope that this can cheer you up!

13. Keep yourself busy

Keep yourself busy is really useful because we always overthink when we are bored. This also explains why we always overthink at night because we simply have nothing to do in bed. But keeping yourself busy is not asking you to scroll your phone again! You may feel relaxed at first but after 1 hour, you will be more frustrated because you’ve wasted your time!

Here are the 21 Creative tiny things to do during quarantine and I think you will really love some of the ideas! I hope you will find some new things to try!

14. In touch with nature

When you encounter something that seems unsolvable, get touch with the nature! Every time when I go hiking or camping, I feel like my problem is so trivial when I look up the blue skies. Get lost in nature and you will find yourself back, can’t be more accurate!

15. Read memes

I know it’s not the most beneficial things to do but if you want a good laugh, meme is your best friend! I usually google meme instead of finding memes on instagram (So that I will end up scrolling Kylie Jenner instagram account…)

16. Eating a plant-based diet

Despite countless benefits to your physical body, a plant-based diet does work wonders to your mental state. Nutrition Journal study revealed that just after 14 days on a vegetarian diet, participants showed significant improvements in mental state (vs omnivores). It’s interesting to know that Researchers there’s a substance called arachidonic acid (AA) that may negatively affect our mood that that chemical is often found in in omnivorous diets than the plant based diet!

Go vegan is so so so refreshing and you feel like you have leveled up your energy and happiness level too! I go all vegan is so extreme, you can try a plant-based diet for only 1 day per week as a starting point!

17. Drink Green tea

While green tea can boost your metabolism, it can boost your mood too! Same as coffee, there’s caffeine in green tea and caffeine can improve various aspects of brain function, including your memory and mental state.

I love green tea more because it contains less caffeine than coffee (so that I can sleep well at night) but still enough make my brain happy!

18. Try something new

Let’s be honest, sometimes our life is really boring. Same job, same routine, the same group of people you interacted. We are not robots and boredom can really make us mentally ill.

If your schedule is so packed that you can’t try a new restaurant out, at least you can make yourself a new toast every morning or walk to a new route when you go to work. Some tiny little changes can already stimulate your brain and make us less bored!

19. Listen to motivating podcast

Instead of listening to pop songs, consider listening to motivating podcast. My favorite podcast is “The Mindset Mentor” hosted by Rob Dial. I really hate to say the word “life-changing” but after listening to his podcast for 1 year straight I can totally notice my changes in a positive way! I am more aware of my emotions, I started to practice self-care and most importantly, I quit my toxic job. I am really glad that he shared all the tips and I do think listening to a podcast can be really helpful to your mental health!

20. Knowing that it’s okay to be not okay

It takes me some time to truly comprehend this but knowing it’s okay to be not okay is really vital in maintaining your mental balance. In some cases, crying seems childish and weak, and sad is not preferable because no one wants to stick with a negative person.

While we hold the negativity all the time, we should not eliminate sadness completely because sadness is also a part of us. It’s okay to cry if you want to, go to see a doctor if needed, or binge eating ice-cream once in while if that makes you happier (I repeat, just once in a while! ). You don’t have to feel bad about yourself just because you are not happy, instead, take a good rest.

21. Make a decision to take responsibility for your own happiness

Sometimes we aren’t really aware of that but if we expect others to make us happy, we will always be disappointed. Not making excuses and take control back is the first step towards happiness!

When it comes to taking responsibility, the first step is taking action! We are always so good at giving an illusion to our brains. Even you have listened to the countless podcasts, read thousands of books, if you don’t really take action and demonstrate the things you’ve learned, you are getting nowhere!

(I know…I am a slow writer…) At the end of the day, despite all the tips, Happiness is a choice, not a result. nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy.
